Rue Bonaparte

Rue Bonaparte

By Andrew Paul

Rue Bonaparte tells the tale of a woman brought back from internal exile by the accidental arrival in her quietly ordered Parisian life of a somewhat mercurial English student, a boy who reminds her of the boy, her passion, she lost in June 1940.  With each meeting, accidental or otherwise, the older French woman and the English boy shine a light on her memories under Occupation and thus bring her out into today, where she faces an unexpected risk and chance and a decision she must make...

A week after reading "Rue Bonaparte", I wanted to write a review but didn't have the words until now. A line from the movie, "Saving Mr. Banks" gave me what I wanted to say about Andrew Paul's book and writing. Walt Disney in speaking to P.L. Travers says this..."..this is what we storytellers do, we restore order with imagination. We instill "hope" again, and again, and again..." The historical events and facts of lives besieged by evil, the atrocities physically as well as emotionally are told, but also the courage, strength of ordinary people fighting against tyranny. There is redemption and much hope in Rue Bonaparte ... beauty for ashes. Doesn't that make the heart sing and soar, very well done Andrew! Love your book:)

Rue Bonaparte is more than just an evocative and compelling love story that brings together two disparate lives with comforting ease. With an affectionate nod to “la difference” between the British and French cultures, present tense and past, it also brutally highlights the reality of war time occupation and the personal, emotional impact of the war on the citizens of Paris. It is a story of awakening, redemption and hope…and quite beautiful.
