Jack

Jack

By Robert Dickson-Oliver

“Jack” follows the fortunes of William Phillips, diagnosed as being mentally ill at the age of nineteen and admitted to a morally corrupt and brutal mental hospital in the 1970’s.

Separated and isolated from the family that had struggled to cope with his behaviour, the prejudice, apathy and bullying to which William is subjected merely serve to add credence to his delusion that he is being persecuted by aliens who want to harm him and those he loves. And of course there’s Jack… and no one must know about him.

This is a fascinating and compassionate insight into mental illness, as well as a deeply disturbing glimpse into the desperate vulnerability of the 'mad'.
Well worth the read.

An exceptional novel, 28 Jan 2014
By Stephanie Aldridge
This review is from: Jack (Paperback)
I loved this book, could not put it down. The author really gives you an insight into the personal hell a paranoid schizophrenic goes through. The brutality of the 70's mental healthcare system is palpable, and the stigma of this illness is heartbreaking. A fantastic read that teaches as well as enthrals. Tears rolled down my face from start to finish. Wow!

Excellent, written by somebody with wonderful insight to the life of mental health patients. Difficult subject yet still very easy to read. Sometimes it made me smile and I'm not ashamed to say that I also cried.

A book I'll remember for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic !, 3 Nov 2013

Didn't want this story to finish, you can really get into the character of William. The author has an obvious passion and understanding of the conditions of mental health patients. The treatment of these patients in the 70's and 80's was horrific, but they got away with it. Diabolical. You really feel for William and just want things to go right for him and for him to get better, but makes you understand more about the condition of schizophrenia. Fantastic and well done !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A can't put down read, 29 Oct 2013
By Dixie
This review is from: Jack (Paperback)
Well written, obviously written with a passion for the subject. Jack gives you a unique insight in to the mind of a paranoid schizophrenic and the treatments that were used in the 70's and 80's! The internal struggle of nursing staff who have an obvious god complex and ignorance and the nurses who care genuinely about their patients. The doctors doing their best and those who don't! The family who are trying to understand why this is happening and trying to pick up the pieces.
As you follow William the through the years, and the emotional roller coaster the author makes you ride you won't want to put this book down.

This review is from: Jack (Paperback)
As i was reading this book i felt a part of the story. The reason for this is because the author has been able to capture the emotions of the characters and you can visualize the story in your mind.
Jack is an emotional roller-coaster and you will feel heartache at his sad existence of life.
i would definitely recommend this book for anyone who enjoys reading a novel that brings the characters to life.
